Dark Bay Thoroughbred

I love horses, and painting them. I find people more difficult, and it is my plan to focus on figures and faces. This took me ages to do, and I must have wiped the girl off the canvas half a dozen times before I was happy with her. Since attending the Karin Jurick workshop in November, I have been working on the lovely smooth surface of Ampersand Gessoboard, and transitioning back to canvas was tricky. I got used to it again after a while, but it is very different to work on in comparison to the gessoboard. There is a give to it, and it grabs the paint in a different way, and I had to use bristle brushes instead of softer brushes. It was  definitely slower.
This is from the Royal Winter Fair 2010 in Toronto.

  2. This is great Cathy. I love the softness of the piece. The highlights on the horse are terrific. Beautiful piece.
Think I still prefer canvas to panels. I like a little grab. Both are fun to experiment with.

  3. Cathy,
This is beautiful. You did a wonderful job on the girl- love her top. The horse is gorgeous- your love for animals shines through! Love the whole painting.
I have been going back and forth with panels and canvas too- maybe that is my problem? My favorite is my own gessoed boards- they have just the right amount of teeth to them.
    Take care!

  6. I really like this painting. I think you did a great job with the whole thing. Little faces are really hard, I scraped one I was working on yesterday a bunch of times. Decided to put it aside and go back to it.
